Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
