The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
